The Rockwell team were pleased to host a ground-breaking ceremony today, to formally mark the start of construction for our landmark development at 82 West.
Transforming this long-derelict site, Rockwell will be working with our contractor John Sisks to deliver the scheme, which will include a 400-bedroom hotel and 66 new homes. The mixed-use tower, which sits between West India Dock and Limehouse Causeway, at the gateway to Canary Wharf, was granted planning permission in October 2018 by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Completion is scheduled for early 2022.
Rockwell have been passionate about putting the community at the heart of the scheme from the outset. The result is not only that the scheme will deliver hundreds of jobs during construction and once open, but also that we’ve strengthened relationships with groups including the London Training Centre, Boundary Community Schools and Westferry FC. Together, this will help maximise the benefit for local people and businesses.
Donal Mulryan, Founder, Rockwell said:, “We are immensely proud to break ground on this landmark hotel which will be a real asset for the area, providing significant benefits for the local community with the creation of more than 250 jobs for local people, enhanced public realm and much needed new homes. It was essential for us to choose a construction firm with an exceptional track-record, and we are excited to work with John Sisk & Son to deliver this high-quality hotel-led scheme.”
The £150 million project, financed by Aviva Investors, will include the country’s tallest Premier Inn hotel and the brand’s largest outside of a London airport.
Louise Woodruff, Property Acquisitions Manager, Whitbread explained: “This is a landmark hotel for us as it will be the tallest Premier Inn in the UK and, aside from our hotels at Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, it will also be our largest in London at 400 bedrooms. It’s great to see construction begin on such a fantastic development which will make a positive contribution to Tower Hamlets by creating local jobs alongside new public areas and affordable homes.”
We were delighted to be joined by Deputy Leader Cllr Mohammed Ahbab Hossain, Deputy Speaker of LB Tower Hamlets, Speaker Cllr Victoria Obaze and London Assembly Member for Labour Group Unmesh Desai, alongside members of the local community and look forward to welcoming them back for the opening!
