Westferry FC: Mid-Season Round-Up

With the football season temporarily at a halt, Rockwell caught up with the team at Westferry FC to speculate about what lies ahead.

Rockwell began sponsoring the Tower Hamlets-based youth team in November 2019 and has since had a charity match against the club. This season saw the club move from being a youth side to a senior football team, a switch which has been seamless for most of the players. As the youngest squad in the league, with an average age of 19, we’re pleased to report that the team’s performance has surpassed expectations.

The team have had a fantastic start to the season and are set to achieve their target of reaching the later rounds of the League Cup, on course to finishing in the top half of the table once play resumes. This success has continued off the pitch as well, with one player securing a scholarship to play College soccer in the United States. Another has begun playing semi-professional football for Ilford FC. These are both huge achievements for which the Rockwell team offer sincere congratulations.

With financial support from Rockwell, Westferry FC have also started planning for their newly formed youth football teams – Under 8s and Unders 10s. Discussions are nearing completion and it is hoped that these sides will be up-and-running once the lockdown comes to an end.

Whilst the lockdown has also had personal impacts on each of the team, as with the rest of us, the Club are upholding their ‘community first’ ethic and continue to support each other with group chats, endless “stay-at-home challenges” and, of course, online FIFA tournaments!

Team Coach, Muhammed Saif, told Rockwell: “We could not have done all this without the support of yourselves at Rockwell, as the funding provided has helped us get to this point. We take great pride in the support you have given and are very fortunate to have an organisation who believes in its local community behind us. On behalf of everyone at Westferry FC, I would like to say thank you for your ongoing support. We hope everyone is in good health and in good spirit.”

We look forward to continuing our support for the Club as they expand and progress. Fingers-crossed for a great finish to the league later this year!
