Vetro Shortlisted for the British Homes Awards 2024

We are pleased to announce that our landmark development in Westferry, Vetro, has been shortlisted for ‘Regeneration Scheme of the Year’ by the prestigious British Homes Awards (BHA) 2024, a competition celebrating projects which act as a catalyst for renewal and growth.

Vetro is joined by some of the UK’s largest and most successful regeneration schemes, those which have set an example of how derelict sites and neglected buildings can be transformed into revitalised spaces benefitting new residents and local communities alike.

Prior to our regeneration project at Vetro, the site at West India Dock Road sat hoarded and vacant for 10 years, presenting a visual blight and physical obstruction in the local area. Poor public access along the perimeter was leading to safety and security issues, particularly at the entrance to Westferry DLR station, where there was limited signage and a lack of a clear through route. All of this meant that – despite the DLR station being a key transport node – local people were avoiding it.

We had a vision to transform this space into a striking building marking Westferry as a destination in its own right, together with an area at ground level that was attractive, pleasant, and above all, safe for local residents to use and enjoy. Our improvements to the public realm at the base of Vetro – including improved lighting and a new pocket park – have completely renewed the space in and around the station.

The building itself has completely transformed a space which had been used and abused by fly-tippers into 68 contemporary new homes, alongside a new 400-bed hotel – the tallest and largest off-airport Premier Inn in the UK. This hotel has brought over 100 new jobs to Westferry – 60% of which are now occupied by locals – in addition to thousands of new visitors and a boost to the local economy.

Through Vetro, we leave behind not only an attractive, landmark building which highlights and reflects the best features of its surroundings, but also a legacy of economic and social benefit in Westferry, setting an example of how truly transformational urban renewal can be achieved.

The awards ceremony announcing the winners of the British Homes Awards will take place on Thursday 12 September 2024 at JW Marriott Grosvenor House Ballroom. Tickets can be booked here.
